Our Story
What puts the soul in Coco’s Soul Food
Humble Beginnings
It’s not about what puts the ‘soul’ in Coco’s Soul Food, so much as the who. That who is Coco’s Soul Food’s owner, Ebrahim Paruk.
Born and raised in Durban, South Africa, Ebrahim spent more time in the kitchen than on the soccer field, learning from his mum who encouraged his culinary curiosity as long as he cleaned up after himself. His love for food only grew from there as he pursed food and beverage studies after school, landing his first job at Durban’s popular restaurant, Havana.
A job opportunity at a Bournemouth hotel brought him to England’s shores and a job offer as a restaurant head chef brought him to Preston two years after, a town he has called home ever since.
In 2007, with a George Foreman grill and £200, Ebrahim opened his first restaurant, 3 Monkeys, to cater to Preston’s student population. The affordable fresh sandwiches, grilled chicken and salads he offered turned into a massive hit, so much so that he saw the need for a sit-down restaurant. In 2011 that need was met and with a lease signed, Coco’s Soul Food was born.
Flavours from around the world
Coco’s Soul Food is more than a meal it’s a journey, one that’s inspired by owner, Ebrahim’s, adventures around the world. Being an avid traveler, Ebrahim takes inspiration from the local food of the countries he visits, bringing those flavours back home to Preston to Coco’s Soul Food’s ever evolving menu.
Using locally sourced ingredients and produce, Coco’s Soul Food offers a wide range of flavours from around the world. From Mexican burritos to Jamaican jerk chicken, it’s easy to see why Coco’s Soul Food has been voted one of the best restaurants in the North West, Lancashire, and why it remains a forerunner in Preston with it’s adventurous menu.
